SURFACE PREPARATION REQUIREMENTS It
is only possible to broadly specify preparation requirements, as these tend
to be specific to each site, however the following is a guide. In general, surface coatings will only be economical in the long term if due attention is given to ensuring that the surface is free of contaminants, and is stable. An uneconomical coating is one which is applied at a cheaper price, which can be achieved through applying the product with minimal preparation, thus saving labour, materials and equipment costs, but resulting in an expensive failing surface. SURFACE
FLUSHING This process is not essential, but highly recommended. Most concrete after preparation work has numerous minor imperfections, holes roughness and low areas, which can 'telegraph' through to the final finish if not smoothed out before coating. This process should be allowed for within the price, or at least offered as a separate option. The cost of surface flushing is minimal, and the results are considerably better. The process takes place after removal of contaminants, and surface smoothness. It is allied by steel float, and is 'skimmed on' to fill all imperfections. NEW CONCRETE/PLASTER Dust captive diamond grinding, or dust captive shotblasting. It should be noted that with the smooth or partial broadcast anti skid finishes, care must be taken not to produce `ruts' with shotblasting - only fine grade shot to be used. The surface may require flushing afterwards with Permachip Epoxy Flushing Compound to remove imperfections. EXISTING CONCRETE/PLASTER In addition to the above requirements;
![]() TILESDust captive diamond grinding. If the finish is not to `telegraph' the shape of the tiles they will require plastering over with either Permachip Polymeric Cement Compound, or Permachip Epoxy Flushing Compound. PAINTED SURFACES In most instances, paint needs to be totally removed from the surface. If the paint is not removed the application of a coating over the top can result in the layer beneath lifting off in future periods, leading to failure. |
